Janelia Farm Housing

Study for 60 Units of Housing. Private Client, United States. 2008-present

Janelia Farm Research Campus is a scientific research center, located on a 689 acre property in Loudoun County, Virginia, on the bank of the Potomac River. Existing facilities opened in 2006 and include a research laboratory building (by architect Raphael Viñoly), conference housing, and visitor housing. The campus leads Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s neuroscience research labs, competing globally for the top post-docs, fellows, and scientific staff. At Janelia, emphasis is placed upon collaboration and team-based research.

Interloop Architecture was asked to develop a site, building, and program study for 60 units of new housing on the campus. Four potential sites were studied on the campus, each with unique organizational strategies. Critical to the study is to demonstrate how each site scheme shapes the communal role of housing on the Janelia Farm campus. Quality long-term housing will support the rigorous work style of the scientists - many with families - and will serve as a recruiting tool for Janelia Farm.

Horse Shoe is a single-loaded ten-story tower with central social court. The tower sits on an elevated, planted deck that serves as a social gathering area for outdoor events and activities. The deck is perforated to allow light and access to resident parking below. A circulation corridor and cantilevered social spaces face a central court space. Private loft units face a dense wooded area on the north edge of the campus.

Tower is a ten story double-loaded housing high-rise with distributed, shared social lounges. The tower sits on an elevated, planted deck that serves as a social gathering area for outdoor events and activities. The deck slopes up from a grassy preservation easement area on the campus, providing smooth pedestrian access to shared social spaces and circulation cores. Covered resident parking is located on the ground level.

Zig-Zag (1) is four double-loaded low-rise buildings with four social event centers. The buildings face "domestic" lawns (north) and "meadow" lawns (south). The buildings and lawns are terraced, taking advantage of the natural grade of the site. The event centers provide connection between terraced lawns and residential units.

Zig-Zag (2) is three double-loaded mid-rise towers with three shared public lawns and one event center. The buildings and lawns are terraced, taking advantage of the natural grade of the site.
